I took many long trips (1000 miles +) on an '87 Savage (4 speed tranny) and never had a problem. The newer 5 speeds have a slightly higher top cruising speed. The Savage has the same cruising range as the Sporty with the original tank so riding with HD's is not a problem. It's as easy to do 400 miles a day on a Savage as it is on a HD.
I always thought the Savage was very comfortable to ride even with the thin padding on the seat. The riding position was perfect for me and that's more important than the seat. Adding an aftermarket throttle lock makes it easier to relax your arm.
